Don't get caught out in the cold – take some advice on insurance and make sure you are covered this winter. Thomson Local directories has got together with the Association of British Insurers to offer some handy insurance tips, from personal possessions to the family car.

• Your home insurance is perhaps the most important cover and with Christmas just around the corner you want to make sure you get it right:
  • Building insurance covers bricks and mortar and the cost of re-building
  • Contents insurance covers the loss of home contents.
  • All risk cover extends to items taken outside the home.
    
• During the harsh winter months when travelling conditions deteriorate, taking out or renewing car insurance is imperative:
  • For car insurance it is a legal requirement to have at least third party cover.
  • Third party fire and theft insurance covers loss to a third party, plus fire or theft of your own car.
  • Fully comprehensive insurance covers loss to the insured and third parties.
    
• Finally, and most importantly, read the small print - check what your policy actually covers, any exclusions and the premiums.
  • If you do need to renew your insurance you can choose from a variety of outlets including, amongst others, Direct (telephone based) companies, Insurance Brokers (registered by Insurance Brokers Registration Council), Insurance Intermediaries.
