March 1997
Thomson Directories Ltd announces two major new initiatives.
This month sees the launch of a new Internet site which provides
access to the complete Thomson business database.
The company has also undergone a complete review of the familiar,
blue Thomson Local directory, the new updated version of which
will be rolled out across the UK during 1997.
The review of the Thomson Local directory started by researching
the fundamental issues of how consumers and businesses searched
for information; how they looked for businesses, how they
stacked directories and what other information they expected
to find. Kendall Gordon, Senior Marketing Manager, explains
the companyÍs approach;
"By listening carefully to customers, advertisers, employees
and users of other directories, the company has redesigned
and now launched a new look Thomson Local. With its new size,
between A4 and A5, it is easier to handle and allows the user
to find the information they want more quickly."
The new format Thomson Local combines the best features of
the old-style directory with many new ones, and is considered
to be the most user-friendly local directory that Thomson
has produced. The new features include sectional dividers,
a trade association guide, a front colour section giving more
relevant local details (including places to visit, community
information, travel information and a guide to local entertainment),
and a brand new index to the Classified section. A fresher
and more up-to-date cover design completes the new local directory.
Two of the major differentiators of the Thomson Local, the
Thomson A-Z of businesses and Thomson Consumer Tips have been
retained in the new version. The Thomson A-Z of businesses
provides a quick reference point; invaluable when you already
know the name of the business you want and donÍt have time
to waste. And the Consumer Tips provide helpful, authoritative
tips and points to consider when choosing a local supplier.
